October Mainsheet 2021

Lee Rosenbaum  | Published on 10/31/2021

October 2021

All Fellow KYC Members,

As one of my last official acts as your commodore I am doing my final Commodore’s comments. I guess you can call it a labor of love these past 2 years. I want to say sorry to Lee and now Mike for being the last to get my stuff in. As any good procrastinator knows, from desperation comes inspiration!

I’ll be around the next few years in the past commodore’s position on the board and will continue to be involved behind the scenes, with the sailing center, with racing, and of course with the current transition. With our officers and new treasurer Ralph Ruffalo, we will be finishing the final report on 2021. While on the face of things not a great year – we would be in the red without Covid relief money - we have survived, kept paying employees, and have invested and positioned ourselves well for the future. The planning and budget for next year will be critical to building on that and making sure we publicize our viability and attractiveness to the returning market and to put us in good standing to negotiate a renewal on our lease with the city. Again, we need to be proactive not reactive.

I have had concerns over the past 2 years about what I called a critical mass of active members. We have had too few of the members doing too much of the work. While I hate to see what seems like a penalty, we need to look at charging for participation hours as has been done in the past and is in our constitution. It certainly is not hard – show up for meetings, show up for house and dock cleanup days and you’re done!

Many potential members, particularly those that don’t race or store with us, use the argument – Why should I become a member, when I can come here for free? With too much of that attitude, we won’t survive!! Think of what it would be like without the Kenosha Yacht Club!! Do we want to become a yacht club on paper only?! It means a lot to me to have an organization of like-minded people providing resources for recreation, education, and socialization. Even as we deal with an aging building and an aging membership, lets revitalize the club for the future and a great next year.

Uploading Your Photo to KYC Website
Mike Ludtke

Did you know you can upload your photo to our website? That way, when people view the online roster, they can see your contact info and your picture. As the new Membership Chair, it would be great to see everyone's photo on the site, that way I can put a name with a face. See instructions below for how to upload your photo.

Instructions for uploading

  • To upload your photo, go towww.KenoshaYachtClub.com, click on the "Member Logon" in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Login using your user name and password. If you don't know your user or password, then you can select the "Forgot My Username/Password" button and you'll get an email to help you recover the information.
  • Once logged in, move your cursor to the upper right corner near your name and scroll over the down arrow.
  • That will bring up a menu, click on the "Profile" option.
  • On the profile page, you'll see either your current picture or a silhouette of a person. The silhouette indicates you have not uploaded a photo. Click on that image to bring up the Member Bio Setting.
  • Click on the "Select New Photo" button. This will bring up a box showing the files on your computer.
  • From there, just find the photo you wish to use and select it, then click "Open" and you'll be asked to save the changes.
  • Scroll to the bottom and click on "Save" to save the changes.

If you'd like, you can also add a short bio in the bio box or links to your social media accounts if you want to share them with other members.

Or, if you are not handy with the computer, email me atSecretary@KenoshaYachtClub.comwith a photo of yourself and I can upload it for you.

Announcements

Dock & Derrick
Doug Vacarello

Reminder to everyone on the dock, recycle empty antifreeze containers at home and not in the garbage cans on the dock. The same for engine oil. Kenosha has a recycling place for oil and it isn’t on the KYC dock.
Try to cover your halyards on the horses on the lawn to protect them from being cut. There is some extra plastic in the derrick house. Talk to me.
Thanks for everyone's help on the dock. What more fun can anyone ask for!
Doug
