August Mainsheet 2021

August 2021

Greetings to all members.

Just a short note to let you know where we are as the summer season winds down. (Can’t believe it’s almost Labor Day!) By all accounts it’s been a pretty successful summer. We have paid off much of our outstanding debt, and have some cash reserve to get us thru the winter. That’s not to say we’re out of the woods by any means. Covid could strengthen its hold on the unvaccinated and make it more likely to see cross-over cases. Another shutdown would be disastrous to the nation, let alone the club. We always face the prospect of serious problems with our old infrastructure, particularly the freezers and the parking lot. Our hats should be off to House chair Jim Pappas and Jim Strouf, who are on top of things constantly and doing much of the work to save us money.

The biggest concern to me and I take a lot of blame, is that we have not put together a good membership campaign. We know we have had attrition, and have been fortunate to have had some new members join up. Thanks to Anne Cassidy for doing some checking out and welcoming. It doesn’t take much expertise, just a lot of enthusiasm and grunt work to get the word out about our great club. So let’s have some volunteers who care about the future of this club.

One thing that will help is cementing our relation with the Kenosha Community Sailing Center. We our currently working on this as part of a cooperative effort to look at future changes that we know are inevitable if we are to survive. We have involved the nominated slate of board members, so we can have continuity. This strong partnership will help us being (unfairly) perceived by the uninformed as a bunch of rich white people sitting around their boats and the bar.

You should have received the nominated slate and it will be reiterated at the Sept 1 members’ meeting. Any individual nominations can be done then, and the final vote will be at October’s meeting. Let’s all stay active, informed, and involved to insure continued success of our great club.

    • The 2021 race season is almost over BUT for those smart cookies, September and October has some of the best sailing days of the year. Some thoughts to inspire you for the remainder of the season:

      • Black flies are gone
      • Steady winds
      • Great temperatures in 70s & 80s
      • Low humidity
      • The sun doesn’t give you sunburn anymore
      • No matter where you point your boat, you sail downwind
      • I’m taller and better looking
      • I have a full head of hair
      • My jokes are funny :)

OK, thought I had you believing but seriously, the next couple of months are absolutely awesome and so I hope each and everyone of you make some time to enjoy some fall boating.

As for racing, there are races through the end of September. Few dates to keep in mind:

      • Last Thursday race - 9/9
      • Last Sunday race - 9/12 (note, if buoys are still in water we will do some ‘fun’ racing on Sundays, possibly to GPS locations and back??)
      • Last Race Race from Waukegan to Kenosha - 9/25 (feeder race down on 9/24 evening if anyone is interested)
