July 2021

Greetings to all members.

Hello to all as we make our way thru an enjoyable summer. The weather has been good although very dry for those of us who own homes. The Hook racers are not complaining as a fast and stormless Hook was just completed. Congrats to the good showing by all and our three place winners.

I hope everyone appreciates the updated signage complementing our Island theme. Make sure you thank Virginia Hartley and the galley committee. When you come down to enjoy the club, remember that this is a very difficult time for all restaurants still having trouble getting employees back on line and some of you may know we went thru a difficult two weeks with our manager tied up with family and jury duty. Think Island Time and plan on and roll with the flow as waits can be longer.

There are definitely challenges ahead, but hopefully we can continue the progress made with the help of Covid relief. We will deal with a nationwide pandemic in itself of higher insurance costs and while we have upgraded our security cameras, security will be an ongoing issue with our open location. We are making a big effort to get a bookkeeper and are going to contract with a local accountant Seymour and Associates to get our books in order and streamline our record keeping as well as a good review/audit to make sure we have a solid plan to make it thru the winter and have a great 2022.

As always, seek out and welcome our recent new members, theStrzelewicz andEhmke families. If you haven’t completed your member service hours, there are still jobs on the jobs list which Jim Pappas and I can help coordinate. I hope you are all staying on top of the resurgence of new strains of Covid. If we all take it seriously, we can avoid more devastating restrictions. We will again try a hybrid member meeting this Wednesday, the 3rd. So I hope to see all that are comfortable attending at 7pm and I think our media and sound will be better for the remote option.

Announcements

  • Dock & Derrick(Doug Vacarello)
    • We are cleaning the dock. If you have a cover or cover structures on the dock, take it home, bundle it together and label it, organize and label your ladders, and the rest will be thrown out.

    • thanks, Doug

  • Sailboat Racing(John Weiss)
    • 2021 is half over. According to George Schwartz II, life is like a roll of toilet paper - the closer you get to the end, the faster it spins… Geeze, I hope I see tomorrow as today flew past…

Anyway we are approaching some of the best days of sailing for the year. August winds might be light but humidity starts to go away along with the bugs and our evenings on the water are incredible. I would love to see some of our power boat members watching Thursday or Sunday races, what a great way to relax and just be in the moment.

As the days grow shorter, by mid August our Thursday starts will move up to 6pm, first warning 5:50pm.

I would like to congratulate all of the Kenosha yacht club boats who represent us well with some major events. The Mac, the Hook, the Queens cup, Double Handed race, the list goes on. It is awesome to know that our little yacht club is home to some of the best sailors on the Great Lakes and I would argue the World!

      See you on the water!

Good Winds: (by: Joyce Rinehart)

  • We wish Chuck Binzel a speedy recovery for a leg infection.
  • At our last Member Meeting Patti Locke shared with us that after the Kenosha Tall Ships 2019, Kenosha, out of all the Tall Ships event that year, was awarded First Place for completing many requirements and challenges! The Mayor’s Office asked that the Kenosha Yacht Club and Kenosha Community Sailing Center receive the awarded plaque for the major role we played in the event. We celebrate our hard work, planning, community cooperation and success as we graciously receive this award.

  • Wishes go out to the Restaurant Staff and Galley Committee for patience, perseverance and a continued good job as we make it through the rest of the summer days. Thanks to everyone for ALL you do! Please stop by, give them your support and enjoy a meal, a special drink and time with family and friends on the water.

  • Congratulations to each of you who took part in the 2021 Hook Race last week! We look forward to hearing you stories again this year.

Sailors Dictionary: "PORTHOLE"

A glass-covered opening in the hull designed in such a way that when closed (while at sea) it admits light and water, and when open (while at anchor) it admits, light, air, and insects (except in Canadian waters, where most species are too large to gain entry in this manner).
