June/July Mainsheet 2020

Lee Rosenbaum  | Published on 8/9/2020

Greetings Fellow KYC Members:
I hope this message finds you well. It seems from what I can gather that members and families are safe and healthy (pandemic-wise). Certainly, a social distancing mandate effects our interaction as a social club. If we all do our part, I hope we can still enjoy our club and our boats the rest of the summer.

I am sorry for the lack of communication resulting in this combined June/July newsletter. It seemed we were always dealing with issues around our reopening complicated by trying to keep my boat sailing and racing. Also, unfortunately, the links to last night’s meeting didn’t work for many – I hope if you haven’t virtually attended you have been reading minutes and messages online. I’ll try to give a short state of the club here.

Our reopening went as well as can be expected and has continued progressing with the leadership of our new manager, Jen Miller, and the Galley Committee headed by Deb Strouf. There will be an introduction by Jen herself in this issue. Fortunately the weather has helped as we have a great outdoor space to social distance. As with many restaurants, customer numbers are limited, and our financial state would be dire if we did not get several SBA and WEDC grants and loans. Thanks, again, to Joyce Rinehart and Deb Strouf for spearheading and following thru with all the paperwork. As we use this money to take care of operating expenses, the restaurant has come thru generating needed income thru good planning and organization. This will go towards reducing and hopefully eliminating some of our outstanding, high-interest debt.

My thanks as always to the stalwart volunteers that we can always count on for derrick house and grounds work. Of course, to keep the older equipment repaired in house way under budget, we rely on House Chairman Jim Strouf. That said, a club like ours is only as good as its membership. I hope everyone can find a way to be an active member and support our club. We are continually looking for help in the financial and communication areas. I am pleased that thru our restaurant, the Sailing Center, and racing, we have attracted new members. Please welcome them when you meet them.

I would like to announce the board has reinstated a 10% discount for members – an affordable way to entice members to use the restaurant and a nice perk particularly for social members. It is not automatic, so identifying yourself and presenting a card is required. I know many of us feel there is good value in what we get and don’t need or take it – as a way of further supporting the club.

I hope our updated Covid policy is reassuring enough that you all feel comfortable and can find a time to enjoy our club and restaurant and still adhere to safe social distancing. Hope to see you ( with mask ) at the club and on the water.

Meet our new Restaurant/Bar General Manager Jen Miller

Born and raised in North East Iowa after graduation from a top-rated High School, I followed my family’s footsteps by joining the United States Navy. I was brought up to be respectful and work hard for what you need. I relocated here in Kenosha in the early 2000’s where my heart followed the fast pace of Restaurant Management that has lasted for just over 2 decades. In my free time I love to spend it doing just about anything outside, my favorite cookout item is RIBS HANDS DOWN. I recently graduated and became an Aesthetician and a licensed Eyelash technician. If I could describe myself in three words, I would say Energetic, hard-worker, and dedicated.

Kenosha Community Sailing Center (KCSC) Update - lots of interest in being on the water!

Despite COVID-19, we have managed to teach lots of children how to sail this summer. A big thanks is owed to Bettie and Paul Wescott who made it happen down at the dock! We also saw a strong interest in adult and family sailing classes. We taught the adult classes on the Rhodes and hopefully some of these new sailors will become KYC members. We have been encouraging those who have taken the class and those interested in forming a radio control sailing club to come down Tuesday nights for an “open sail.”

We are also happy to report that our kayak and SUP (Stand Up Paddle) operation is going well. The weekends have been very busy and we have even set up a tent at the road to talk to passersby (and there have been a lot of them). We are using it as an opportunity to educate people about our offerings and water safety. In August we will begin offering classes, selling t-shirts and promoting our two fishing kayaks to the community.

Please help us spread the word about our kayaks and SUP rentals or buy a gift certificate. We have a BOGO set-up with the restaurant, so people who rent with us will get a buy-one-get-one free beer or free soda with the purchase of a KYC meal. Truly, spending an hour paddling around the harbor and then relaxing harborside at the yacht club is a wonderful experience. We offer gift certificates, so even if you don’t want to paddle, I’m sure there is someone you know that does.

Letter From The Editor

Our racers have had to handle some difficult weather on the two distance races so far.The Double and Hook races resulted in sails being torn, masts breaking, woman overboard and countless other smaller malfunctions.
The KYC racers continue to place at the top when competing on these distance races with boats from many other clubs around the lake. This translates into the level of competition we see on Thursday & Sunday here at KYC. Our turnouts have been great on both days and the weather mostly has been cooperating. As we move into the later portion of our season we will see some of the best times to be out on the water.
The restaurant is open Wednesday - Sunday so stop on by for a bite or drink.
